What is a CSA?

What is a CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a way for consumers to buy local, seasonal produce directly from a farmer in their community. It is basically a farm share. A farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Local consumers buy a share into the farm – they support this year’s crop with money up front for a membership, and in exchange, each week during the growing season, they will receive a box of local, fresh, and seasonal produce directly from the farm.

Advantages for farmers:

* Get to spend time marketing the food early in the year, before their 16 hour days in the field begin
* Receive payment early in the season, which helps with the farm's cash flow
* Have an opportunity to get to know the people who eat the food they grow

Advantages for consumers:

* Eat ultra-fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits
* Get exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking
* Usually get to visit the farm at least once a season
* Find that kids typically favor food from "their" farm even veggies they've never been known to eat
* Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows their food and learn more about how food is grown

 How does our CSA work?

Emerald Acres 2019 Summer CSA: Members support the farm with a share of the budget & receive a share of the season’s harvest as a weekly harvest box, picked-up from a delivery site in Lincoln. We also provide a weekly newsletter, produce information and recipes. Harvest shares have an average value of $25/week over the season. You may choose a full 18-week season share or the 9-week season half share. The 9-week season is the same size share delivered every other week. Summer CSA 2019 begins June 5th & goes through Oct 2nd  All shares that are not picked up will be donated. Share cost is $450 for the 18-week Summer Full Share & $225 for the 9-week Half Share. A signed pledge form & deposit ($180) or full payment reserves a share. We strongly encourage early deposits, but we accept pledges until all spots are filled. Early pledges are important to us & help with planning! Subsequent payment of the share balance is due by June 5, 2019.
